Ministry of Health Urges Citizens to Get Third Dose of Covid-19 Vaccine

PHNOM PENH: The National Commission for Covid-19 Vaccination of the Ministry of Health has released a statement urging citizens to get at least the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, following Prime Minister’s high recommendation during his speech at the handover ceremony of over one million AstraZeneca vaccines delivered by Italy on Monday.

The National Commission for Covid-19 Vaccination issued a statement on Monday, 25 April, encouraging citizens to get their third dose or booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. The statement includes that the National Commission is currently continuing to provide third or fourth Covid-19 booster shots to those aged five and above at national hospitals, referral hospitals, health centers and Covid-19 vaccination centers organized in cooperation with hospitals and the 25 Capital-Provincial Administrations.

The National Commission underlined that the number of people who have received their third or fourth booster dose of the vaccine within the 5 years and above age group is still limited, so the Commission further reminds and urges all eligible members of the public to go and get their booster shots in a timely manner at the aforementioned locations, which will be open every day, including weekends and holidays. The statement confirms that all eligible will be able to get a booster dose simply by showing their Covid-19 vaccination card.

The National Commission also reminds all that the third dose can be safely administered after at least three months have passed since the previous dose, or after at least three months have passed since contracting Covid-19. Members of the public are urged to get their booster shots with this standard gap between doses, as this is the recommended amount of time needed to best strengthen and enhance the immune system of individuals and communities in a timely manner.

The statement emphasizes that following this timely vaccination schedule will allow the public to be freed from the severe impacts of the Covid-19 virus, including the Omicron variant, which is still circulating in the local community, and other new variants that are already actively circulating in the South East Asian region and beyond.

The national third dose vaccination campaign was officially announced by Prime Minister Hun Sen on the morning of Monday, 25 April, during the handover ceremony of over one million AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines delivered by the Government and people of Italy.

As of Tuesday, 26 April, the outdoor mask mandate has also been lifted in Cambodia, meaning that members of the public can now choose whether to wear masks or not in outdoor, public areas at their own volition. The Prime Minister has emphasized that with mask-wearing no longer being mandatory, it is even more important that all citizens get their booster doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, to build local herd immunity and ensure community protection.
